So, this is a topic that's been bugging me for a while now and that I've grown really self-conscious about. I'm kind of surprised there hasn't been more discussion about it, I've seen it referenced in threads here and there but never fully discussed; so I thought I'd bring it up.

Where is the line drawn between written work being considered prose versus it being called poetry?

I've been told that poetry is "the perfect story told with the perfect words" while prose is a lot more lax with it's choice of diction but I feel this offers a lot of grey area where it can swing either way.

Where do you stand? Is it in diction? Structure? Use of literary devices?

Hopefully someone with more experience and/or technical aptitude can help enlighten me, because google-ing the topic has only made me more confused.
Someone on AllPoetry asked me why I have the need to analyze poetry - it's because I feel the need to attach meaning to work. You can definitely appreciate work for what it is on the surface but there's always so much more to seen if you dive deeper into the rhythm, the wordplay and even the arrangement(line breaks, font. ect) of a (well written) piece which give such a more satisfying experience, for me.

For my own work, at least with more poetic pieces, I try to find a balance between being technically proficient and having a little mass appeal. My aim is never to try to out wit or alienate someone who doesn't want to or isn't at the skill level necessary to analyze a piece, I just want to add little nuggets for those who want to take that extra step.

I still struggle a lot with finding that middle ground which leaves me stuck on a piece for months on end. If I lean too much to one side, my work becomes too much like line-breaking prose while if I lean too much to the other side, I tend to alienate other people. I'm still trying to figure out at what point written words stop being prose and become poetry. There's a big grey area in modern poetry where of it sounds a lot like prose.

If someone out there with more experience than me could clear this up that would be amazing.

Like a vagabond.

Split –
At a four-way
street, past any signs
that I comprehend.

If I had I had it my way,
I would cruise on the highway
and never stop.

A 1 cent paper note for hong kong, went out of print 1995, I found this under my bed yesterday while cleaning up. No idea where it came from.

Loosely inspired by a scene in Sword Art Online, where Kirito says at some point, "I can't even remember the faces of all the people I've killed", or something along those lines.
